The Project for the Development of Digital Projection in Cinemas is organized by North Karelia Polytechnic and funded by The European Regional Development Fund, The Regional Council of North Karelia and Savon Kinot Ltd.

The project is strongly linked with a fourplex cinema that was developed and constructed during 2002-2005 and opened its doors in September 2005 in Joensuu, Finland. The cinema is owned and managed by Savon Kinot Ltd.

The Project for the Development of Digital Projection in Cinemas has several goals:

• We research and develop the activities, new usage of technology and new services of the fourplex. We offer a forum where educational institutions and enterprises may meet each other.
• We also offer facilities to local audiovisual producers and media students to show their work. In the future local entrepreneurs, advertising agencies and audiovisual producers—will get more business opportunities because of the lower costs of digital advertising. And of course, local companies—those who want to wake up their possible clients—will also benefit from the lower costs of advertising.
• One of our goals is to develop new activities for the theatre. In the project we will establish an annual film festival in Joensuu. Digital technology will be one important angle of the festival.
• We also explore the possibilities for new business opportunities like conferences, training events or other performances and shows. This is one aspect of the project where the digitalization of cinema is quite important. Digital projecting is very flexible: you can use the same projector with different kinds of formats. This is one of our main goals: to research the possibilities and the opportunities of digital information technology in Finland and especially in Joensuu.
• Our most important role is to be "the middle man", the link between the movie theatre (Savon Kinot Ltd) and other operators, whether they are local producers, local entrepreneurs, national or international distributors, TV-channels, phone operators, movie production companies or organizers of local cultural events.
